2024 OSHP Report Analyzes 5 Years of Ohio Fatal Car Accidents

The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) conducted a review of fatal crashes on state roadways over five years, from 2019 to 2023. They found that there were 5,773 fatal crashes resulting in 6,262 deaths during this time.

The top contributing factors to these cases include driving off the roadway, driving at unsafe speed, driving left of center, failing to yield the right of way, following too closely, and running stop signs.

Ohio Counties with the Most Fatal Car Crashes

The highest number of fatal crashes occurred in:

• Franklin County (570)
• Cuyahoga (487)
• Hamilton (319)
• Montgomery (286)
• Lucas (225)

Combined, these five counties accounted for 33% of all fatal crashes statewide.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine highlighted the role all drivers play in preventing tragedies on the roads. He urged drivers to prioritize safety by keeping their hands on the wheel, focusing on the road, and refraining from using electronic devices.

When & Where Most Ohio Fatal Car Accidents Occur

OSHP reported that more than one in three fatal crashes occurred between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with Fridays and Saturdays being the most frequent. During this period, Interstate 71, Interstate 75, and US Route 40 were identified as the leading routes for fatal crashes.

In Northeast Ohio, Cuyahoga County had the highest number of fatal crashes (487), followed by Summit (207), Lorain (108), Portage (79), Geauga (60), Medina (57), and Lake (51) counties.

State officials noted that since Ohio implemented tougher laws, distracted driving-related crashes have decreased on state roadways. OSHP superintendent Colonel Charles A. Jones, emphasized the importance of motorists adhering to traffic laws and practicing safe driving habits to contribute to safer roadways.
